The only thing remotely interesting about this piece is that I admitted to getting expelled from high school.

Four years ago at about this time, I sat in the library of my high school while faculty members discussed whether or not I should be expelled. I was cocky. I didn’t think anything could happen to me.My world pretty much came to an end that day. Yet, looking back, I can’t help but think that it was just another chapter in my life that had come to an end, with another one opening right in front of me.

For that reason, you won’t see any sappy goodbye and conclusion to this column. When I wrapped an earlier incarnation of this column for the Daily Trojan, “Life and Times,” I thought I’d pretty much hit a stall in my writing career. That column had a nice, happy conclusion that simply didn’t fit with the type of person I am, and people who knew me didn’t buy it.

So I turned to web design. Now I have my own business that is totally unrelated to journalism or my major.

Life doesn’t come with packaged endings that leave everyone satisfied. When can you honestly say that a major episode of your life could easily be wrapped up in 500 words? I didn’t think you could.

This will be my last column for the Daily Trojan, and I can’t say that I’ll miss the deadlines and the extra 500 words I had to write a week in addition to my schoolwork. I will miss various organizations accusing me of hate crimes. But hey, that’s happened before. I’m not exactly treading into new territory when I offend someone.

There’s been something that’s really bugging me. Springfest was held this past weekend, and Program Board got a bunch of recognizable bands like Blink-182 and the Alkaholiks to perform for students.

So why is it that when things start to get going, the university shuts down the party because people at the event are having a good time?

According to an article in Monday’s Daily Trojan, the concert was shut down early because “the crowd became out of hand and began endangering the safety of other concertgoers.” OK, show of hands: have you ever been to a concert where there haven’t been high-energy people? Don’t count fogey rock, where everyone passes the bowl and sees multicolored bears.

Concerts are about being rowdy and having fun. You don’t stand there, nod your head and sing along. Mosh pits form. People jump around and go nuts, and yes, concertgoers get injured. That’s the atmosphere of a solid concert. It’s also a part of life.

Besides, beer was being sold. Alcohol lowers people’s inhibitions, right? You’ve got to anticipate this stuff. Money should be refunded, especially since the big crowd-drawer was Blink-182. And next time, get a security force that’s less likely to whine than DPS.

Well, I guess that’s my last rant. “Lame Duck” is dead. It’s been real, everyone.
