Columnist says goodbye to life and times
November 25th, 1996
Y’all come back, y’hear?
Another semester coming to a close.A lot of changes.
Through this column, you’ve been able to see just how I tick. You know about my personal relationships with friends, family and–dare I say it–car. Here’s my last piece, a reflection of sorts on the last semester.
I applied for this column because I thought it would be a cool thing to do. Instead, it’s become an extension of myself. I can write stuff I wouldn’t normally tell people, like my love for home and subsequent realization that I can’t go there anymore.
I’ve made more friends this semester than at any other time in my life. I moved into my fraternity house for lack of better housing, but I found that living in a fraternity house is one of the best and most important decisions I ever made. I told my parents I’ll be living in the house for the rest of my tenure at USC, and they think it’s great.
My family means more and more to me every day. I’ve only realized it since I came to school, but my parents and my brother are people I love unconditionally, and with good reason. It’s because of them that I’m the person I am today.

I think I’m the only person who ever elicited hate mail for a column. Apparently, several Trojan Superfans weren’t too impressed with my take on why the four of them needed to stand and irritate the hundreds of students around them. So they looked stupid. That’s life. “Tribute to Troy” still drives me nuts, too.
“Life and Times” has had previous incarnations for the Daily Trojan, including a comic strip that ran randomly last year. The comic strip brushed on the horrific two years that were my life at House of Bagels. I couldn’t come up with a name for the strip, but one of my friends and fraternity brothers gave me “Life and Times.” It seemed so natural a term that I adopted it for the column. This is my life, my time.
So I’m sitting here writing my last column of the semester. Most importantly, this is my last column as a senior editor of the Daily Trojan. It will seem almost strange not taking the elevator to the fourth floor of the Student Union on a daily basis. I feel like I haven’t been here that long, yet at the same time it feels like a gnawing eternity.
I’ve written for Viewpoint, drawn comics, produced the graphics for almost a year, and penned a piece or two for Diversions, where “Life and Times” sits proudly every Monday. Hell, I’d even write for Sports if I liked sports.
A final word of advice for all those out there who feel I have a right to dole it out: if you’re looking for some really, really good music, check out Def Leppard. Hysteria sold 15 million albums. No, buy some Tesla… yeah, Tesla.
